What is Actos?
Actos is a prescription drug that is used to treat type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control in adults. It is prescribed to patients who have trouble with regulating their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone and has been prescribed to patients for more than a decade. Because of its life threatening side effects, patients who have used Actos are seeking the help from personal injury attorneys in order to find out their legal rights and what compensation they are eligible for through an Actos lawsuit.
Severe and life threatening side effect of Actos
Several studies have shown a link between Actos and bladder cancer, a stronger link than what was shown during the clinical trial phase. There was an indication during the clinical trials of the possibility of Actos causing bladder cancer, however, doctors and their patients were not aware of such a possibility. Since that time, a number of studies have shown a link between Actos and cancer. One such study, published in May 2012, in the British Medical Journal puts patients who take Actos at an 83 percent higher risk for bladder cancer. The FDA reported that patients who take Actos for more than one year are at a 40 percent increased risk for bladder cancer, this study was based on dose and duration of use. Bladder cancer is not the only severe and life threatening side effect of Actos. Clinical trials also showed that patients can develop bone fractures, lactic acidosis, and congestive heart failure. Two side effects of Actos, water retention and severe weight gain, are both contributors to heart problems.
This drug has been pulled off of the market in both Germany and France. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing safety concerns with regards to the drug.
The pharmaceutical company Takeda, which makes Actos, has taken a wait and see approach to the increase in reports regarding the severe side effects of Actos that leads to life-threatening conditions, thus prompting users to seek a personal injury attorney to file a lawsuit. The reason they have taken this approach may be due to the fact that they have earned in excess of $2 billion dollars in revenue from Actos alone.
